Venice and Veneto: Mysterious Alleys and Breathtaking Countryside

Venice, a truly unique city built on a lagoon in northeastern Italy, has preserved its historic buildings, canals, and bridges for centuries. Its winding waterways and elegant architecture create a timeless and haunting atmosphere that continues to captivate visitors. The Grand Canal, the city's main waterway, winds through its heart, flanked by opulent Renaissance and Gothic facades of ancient palazzos. Iconic landmarks such as St Mark’s Square, with its magnificent basilica, the imposing Doge’s Palace, and the Rialto Bridge, one of the oldest and most picturesque crossings, stand as testaments to Venice’s rich history and architectural splendour. The bustling Rialto Market, a hub of trade since the Middle Ages, still brims with fresh seafood and local produce. Art lovers can enjoy the avant-garde collection of Peggy Guggenheim, housed in her former palazzo, or admire Venetian masters at the Gallerie dell’Accademia, home to works by Bellini, Titian, and Veronese. Those seeking to get away from the crowds can explore Murano and Burano: Murano, renowned for its exquisite glassblowing, and Burano, famous for its brightly painted fishermen’s houses and delicate lace-making tradition. Fans of Thomas Mann may be drawn to the Lido di Venezia, a long barrier island between the lagoon and the Adriatic, immortalised in Death in Venice. Known for its beaches, Belle Époque hotels, and as the host of the Venice Film Festival, the Lido’s historic charm and seaside promenades embody the novel’s themes of beauty, transience, and Venice’s fading grandeur.

While Venice is navigated by boats and footbridges, renting a car allows for exploration beyond its canals. Padua (40 km) boasts one of the world’s oldest universities, where Galileo taught, alongside stunning medieval and Renaissance architecture. The Prosecco Wine Region (70 km) offers rolling vineyards, charming hilltop towns, and excellent wine-tasting experiences. For coastal elegance, Trieste (160 km) blends Italian, Austrian, and Slavic influences, with Piazza Unità d’Italia, Miramare Castle, and historic cafés. James Joyce lived in Trieste for over a decade, drawing inspiration from its cosmopolitan character while revising Dubliners, completing A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and beginning Ulysses. Nature lovers can escape to the Dolomites (150 km), a paradise for hiking, skiing, and outdoor adventures, with villages like Cortina d'Ampezzo and breathtaking alpine lakes such as Lago di Braies.

Venice Airport

Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) is located approximately 13 km from Venice’s Piazzale Roma. The airport offers a convenient car rental experience, with major companies such as Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Enterprise, and Sixt operating on-site. Car rental offices are located on the third floor of the multilevel parking P1. From the Arrivals Hall, exit the terminal, head left towards the covered walkway, and follow the signs to P1 parking. If you need to complete the check-in process, you can do so at the desk or self-service kiosk, then simply head to the nearby parking area to pick up your vehicle.

Drop-offs: Car returns are made at the same car rental centre, conveniently located close to the terminal.

Payment: A credit card is typically required for both payment and the security deposit. Some companies may also accept debit cards under certain conditions.

Vehicle recommendation: For a balance of performance and practicality, the Cupra Formentor excels on Dolomite roads, while the Toyota RAV4 offers reliability for long trips through the Prosecco region. In bustling cities like Padua and Verona, the Mazda 3 provides a refined yet compact drive, while the Toyota Yaris is a fuel-efficient choice for navigating narrow streets. For longer journeys or extra cargo space, the Škoda Octavia Estate ensures practicality. Those seeking luxury can opt for the sleek DS 4 for city driving or the Cupra Leon Sportstourer, which blends sportiness with comfort for highway cruising.
To avoid delays, particularly during peak season, it’s advisable to book your car rental in advance.
