Faro is one of Europe’s sunniest destinations with a deep cultural and historical heritage. The city’s well-preserved Old Town is enclosed by ancient Moorish walls and features cobbled streets, traditional Portuguese architecture, and historic landmarks. Notable sites include the Arco da Vila, a neoclassical archway built over the remains of a Moorish city gate, and the Sé de Faro, a 13th-century cathedral blending Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles, which offers panoramic views from its bell tower. The Carmo Church is home to the Chapel of Bones, where centuries-old skulls and bones offer a macabre glimpse into Faro’s history. Along the waterfront, Faro Marina provides a scenic setting with restaurants, cafés, and boat tours.
Faro is a key transport hub with excellent road connections, making it an ideal base for exploring the wider Algarve region. Just off the coast, within the Ria Formosa Natural Park, lie the pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters of Ilha Deserta and Ilha da Culatra. Ten kilometres east of Faro, Olhão is a vibrant fishing town renowned for its seafood market and waterfront promenade, while Loulé, 18 kilometres inland, boasts a lively market, a medieval castle, and a unique atmosphere. Eleven kilometres north of Faro, the Estoi Milreu Roman Ruins reveal the remains of an ancient villa, complete with intricate mosaics and historic baths, located near the Palácio de Estoi.
Faro International Airport
Faro Airport (FAO) is located approximately 6 kilometres from the Faro city centre.
The car rental desks of major companies, such as Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Enterprise, and Sixt, are situated in the Arrivals Area of the terminal. For companies without a physical counter inside the terminal, such as some local or smaller operators, services are provided at the P4 parking area, located approximately 250 metres to the left outside the Arrivals Hall. If you need to complete the check-in process, you can do so at the desk or self-service kiosk, then simply head to the nearby parking area to pick up your vehicle.
Drop-offs: Vehicles rented from companies with desks inside the terminal should be returned to their designated terminal parking. Those from Park P4 must be returned there.
Payment: A credit card is typically required for both payment and the security deposit. Some companies may also accept debit cards under certain conditions.
Vehicle recommendation: A compact SUV is the ideal choice for driving in and around Faro, Portugal, offering a good balance of comfort, efficiency, and versatility. The Peugeot 2008 or Volkswagen T-Roc are great options, providing a smooth ride in the city while handling occasional countryside roads with ease. For those needing extra space for passengers or luggage, the Peugeot 3008 or Škoda Karoq offer a roomier interior without feeling too bulky for city driving.
To avoid delays, particularly during peak season, it’s advisable to book your car rental in advance.
