Nestled between the hills and the Mediterranean Sea, Barcelona, the colourful capital of Catalonia, boasts world-class museums, sunny beaches, and an outstanding culinary scene. Antoni Gaudí’s masterpiece, the Sagrada Família cathedral, is a significant landmark. Nearby, the historic Gothic Quarter's narrow, cobbled streets showcase ancient and medieval architecture. Overlooking the city, Montjuïc Castle adds to Barcelona's charm with panoramic views.
Barcelona also serves as an ideal starting point for exploring the diverse Catalan countryside by car. Just outside the city, Montserrat Mountain offers breathtaking views and a historic Benedictine abbey. To the north, the Costa Brava's rugged coastline and charming beaches are perfect for a leisurely drive. Wine enthusiasts can head west to the Penedès region, renowned for its cava and wine cellars. South of Barcelona lies the ancient Roman city of Tarragona, with a wealth of archaeological sites, including the impressive Tarragona Amphitheatre.
Barcelona Airport
Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN) is located approximately 12 kilometres southwest of Barcelona's city centre.
The airport provides car rental services with rental desks located inside both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. At Terminal 1, car rental offices are located on the ground and first floors, near the Arrivals Hall. At Terminal 2, rental desks are found in section B, close to the main exit. Major car rental companies, including Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Enterprise, and Sixt, operate from both terminals. If you need to travel between terminals, a free shuttle bus runs 24/7, making transfers between T1 and T2 easy. If you need to complete the check-in process, you can do so at the desk or self-service kiosk, then simply head to the nearby parking area to pick up your vehicle.
Drop-offs: Vehicles must be returned to the designated rental return areas at each terminal.
Payment: A credit card is typically required for both payment and the security deposit. Some companies may also accept debit cards under certain conditions.
Vehicle recommendation: In Barcelona, a smaller SUV such as the Toyota Yaris Cross or Renault Captur provides great manoeuvrability without sacrificing comfort. Compact SUVs like the Škoda Karoq or Volkswagen T-Roc offer good fuel efficiency for shorter trips around the city. When travelling with a family across the wider Catalonia region to destinations like the Pyrenees or the Costa Brava, a larger SUV is ideal. It offers more luggage space and a higher seating position for better visibility and safety. The Peugeot 3008 and Toyota RAV4 are excellent choices for such journeys.
To avoid delays, particularly during peak season, it’s advisable to book your car rental in advance.
