Lisbon, Portugal’s hilly capital, is situated along the Tagus River and rich in heritage. Historical neighbourhoods like Alfama and Bairro Alto are renowned for their steep streets and stunning viewpoints. São Jorge Castle towers over the cityscape, its high vantage point revealing Lisbon's Moorish history. The city’s maritime heritage is on display at the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower, both UNESCO World Heritage sites and emblematic of Portugal's Age of Discoveries.
Near Lisbon, the attractions are plentiful, ranging from the fairytale palaces of Sintra and the coastal towns of Cascais and Estoril, to the vineyards of Arrábida Natural Park. Sintra, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape, is home to enchanting castles such as Pena Palace and historic ruins nestled within its forested hills. The dramatic cliffs and pristine beaches at Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe, offer stunning views.
Lisbon Airport
Lisbon Airport (LIS), also known as Humberto Delgado Airport, is approximately 7 kilometres north of the city centre.
Lisbon Airport’s car rental centre is located in the Arrivals Hall of Terminal 1, near the baggage claim area. Major car rental companies such as Avis, Europcar, Goldcar, Guerin, Hertz, and Sixt operate from this location. If you arrive at Terminal 2, you'll need to transfer to Terminal 1 to access car rental services. A free shuttle bus connects Terminal 2 to Terminal 1 approximately every 10–15 minutes. If you need to complete the check-in process, you can do so at the desk or self-service kiosk, then simply head to the nearby parking area to pick up your vehicle.
Drop-offs: When returning your rental vehicle, follow the signs to the designated car rental return area at the airport.
Payment: A credit card is typically required for both payment and the security deposit. Some companies may also accept debit cards under certain conditions.
Vehicle recommendation: The winding, hilly streets of Lisbon call for smaller SUVs like the Opel Mokka or Renault Captur. Compact SUVs such as the Škoda Karoq and Kia Sportage are ideal for exploring the surrounding areas, given the city's hilly terrain and landscapes. For those travelling in larger groups or needing more space for gear, roomier SUVs like the Toyota RAV4 and Peugeot 3008 offer added comfort and ample storage, making them perfect for long journeys across various terrains.
To avoid delays, particularly during peak season, it’s advisable to book your car rental in advance.
