The Ford Mustang brings distinctive character to driving the roads around San Francisco. Four seats and responsive handling make it well suited to couples exploring winding stretches of coastal road. The Mustang feels engaging on the open-road sections of Highway 1.
Lombard Street
Lombard Street's famous block drops via eight hairpin bends lined with hydrangeas between Hyde and Leavenworth streets. The brick-paved road runs one-way downhill, with steps on either side open to pedestrians. The one-way descent requires careful driving, particularly when the area is busy.
Ocean Beach
Ocean Beach stretches along San Francisco's western edge, beside Sunset Dunes, a two-mile park created from part of the former Great Highway. Cold water, powerful waves and hazardous currents make the beach suitable only for experienced surfers, while swimming and wading are unsafe. The Mustang is a comfortable choice for the drive to the coast, with parking available in several areas near the beach.
Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk
The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk opened in 1907 and is home to the Giant Dipper, a 1924 wooden roller coaster and US National Historic Landmark. The broad beach sits directly beside the amusement park, making it easy to combine the rides with time by the sea. The Mustang is well suited to the longer drive south to Santa Cruz.
Panoramic Highway climbs from Mill Valley through wooded slopes towards Mount Tamalpais State Park. From Pantoll Road, East Ridgecrest Boulevard continues towards East Peak. On clear days, the upper mountain offers views of San Francisco Bay, the city, the East Bay and the Farallon Islands. The Mustang feels responsive on the winding route, although the narrower sections require attentive driving.
