The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is a five-seat off-road SUV with automatic gearbox, space for three large and one small piece of luggage, and removable doors and roof panels for open-air driving on Miami's coastal corridors. Adventure travellers and solo drivers will find its trail capability and rugged character well matched to the Everglades, the Florida Keys, and Biscayne Bay's backcountry launch sites. The Wrangler's character suits Miami's outdoor edges far more than its city centre.
Key Largo and John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park off Key Largo was the first undersea park in the United States, established in 1963 to protect the only living coral barrier reef in the continental US. Glass-bottom boat tours, snorkelling, and scuba diving depart from the visitor centre throughout the day.
Coral Castle
Coral Castle in Homestead is a sculpture garden of over 1,000 tonnes of coral rock, carved and assembled single-handedly by Edward Leedskalnin between 1923 and 1951. The open-air site is a genuine curiosity. How Leedskalnin moved the massive stone blocks without machinery remains unexplained.
Everglades — Shark Valley
Shark Valley in Everglades National Park offers a 24 km paved loop, with alligators often visible from the trail and a ranger-guided tram tour available daily. The observation tower at the midpoint rises 20 metres above the River of Grass for a 360-degree view of the flat, waterlogged wilderness.
Overseas Highway — Miami to Key Largo
US-1 leaves Homestead and crosses onto the Overseas Highway, where the ocean occupies both sides of a narrow road across coral and fill. The Wrangler feels at home on this open coastal drive. Card Sound Bridge arcs above Florida Bay before the first of the Keys arrives at Key Largo.
