Porto is known for lending its name to both the local wine called Port and the country of Portugal. The city is located on the banks of the Douro River, with its north bank home to the historic district of Ribeira. Its colourful facades, lively riverfront, and azulejo-tiled buildings frame the majestic Dom Luís I Bridge, a 19th-century engineering marvel offering stunning city views. Livraria Lello, a neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau masterpiece, is one of the world's most beautiful bookshops and a must-visit for architecture and literature fans. Harry Potter fans claim it inspired J.K. Rowling in creating the look of Hogwarts. No visit to Porto is complete without trying the francesinha sandwich, smothered in a spicy tomato and beer sauce, and enjoying a glass of port after a meal.
The Douro Valley is located approximately 100 km east of Porto. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it is recognised as one of the world's most beautiful wine regions. Visitors can explore historic wineries, known as quintas, and enjoy wine tastings amidst breathtaking landscapes. Serras do Porto Park, located 20 km east of Porto, offers scenic trails, diverse wildlife, and breathtaking viewpoints. Guimarães, often called the 'birthplace of Portugal,' lies 55 km northeast of Porto and boasts a well-preserved medieval centre, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Highlights include Guimarães Castle, a 10th-century fortress symbolising the nation's origins, and the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, a grand 15th-century residence. Penha Mountain provides a peaceful retreat above the city, offering panoramic views and excellent hiking opportunities.
Porto Airport: Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO), is located approximately 11 kilometres northwest of the city centre.
The airport offers a straightforward car rental experience with a car rental centre located just outside Terminal 1. Major car rental companies such as Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Enterprise, and Sixt are located there. If you need to complete the check-in process, you can do so at the desk or self-service kiosk, then simply head to the nearby parking area to pick up your vehicle.
Drop-offs: Cars are returned to the same car rental centre, conveniently located near the terminal.
Payment: A credit card is typically required for both payment and the security deposit. Some companies may also accept debit cards under certain conditions.
Vehicle recommendation: The ideal car for Porto is a smaller SUV like the Opel Mokka or Renault Captur, offering a higher driving position without the bulk, making it easier to navigate the city's narrow, hilly streets and tight parking spaces. For longer trips, a compact SUV such as the Škoda Karoq or Peugeot 3008 provides more space, versatility, and comfort on highways while accommodating luggage with ease.
To avoid delays, particularly during peak season, it’s advisable to book your car rental in advance.
