Málaga, the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, basks in the sunshine of the Costa del Sol. The city is home to the Alcazaba, an 11th-century Moorish fortress that offers, in addition to panoramic views of the city and sea, fascinating archaeological exhibits. Art enthusiasts can explore the Picasso Museum and the Carmen Thyssen Museum. The latter, housed in the 16th-century Villalón Palace, displays an impressive collection of 19th-century Spanish paintings focusing on Andalusian art. Muelle Uno is a modern waterfront shopping and leisure area in the Port of Málaga that's ideal for a leisurely afternoon of dining and enjoying the views. Tapas bars and seafood restaurants serve a delightful blend of fresh seafood, local wines, and traditional Andalusian dishes.
Just 50 km from Málaga, the Nerja Caves are celebrated for their prehistoric paintings and stunning rock formations. Approximately 130 km away is Granada, home to the magnificent Alhambra, a masterpiece of Moorish architecture. Roughly 160 km from Málaga lies Córdoba, whose historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site, renowned for its narrow winding streets, traditional patios, and historic buildings, reflecting a rich cultural history shaped by Christian, Muslim, and Jewish influences.
Málaga Airport
Málaga–Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) is located 8 km southwest of Málaga. The airport offers a convenient car rental experience with a dedicated car rental centre located just outside Terminal 3. If you arrive at Terminal 2, a complimentary shuttle bus runs every 10–15 minutes to the centre. Major car rental companies such as Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Enterprise, and Sixt are located there. If you need to complete the check-in process, you can do so at the desk or self-service kiosk, then simply head to the nearby parking area to pick up your vehicle.
Drop-offs: Cars are returned to the same car rental centre, conveniently located just a short walk from the terminals.
Payment: A credit card is typically required for both payment and the security deposit. Some companies may also accept debit cards under certain conditions.
Vehicle recommendation: The Kia Sportage is a reliable compact SUV that's equally at home in cities and countryside. Its comfortable interior and responsive handling make it a great choice for long drives through Andalusia's diverse landscapes. Alternatively, the Toyota RAV4, renowned for its dependability and spaciousness, offers plenty of room for passengers and luggage, making it ideal for exploring historical sites and natural parks.
For those who prefer a smaller car, the stylish and compact Opel Mokka is perfect for navigating the narrow streets of Málaga and other Andalusian towns. It offers a comfortable driving experience without the bulk of a larger SUV. Similarly, the Renault Captur is both efficient and practical, providing ample space and agility for city driving while also being capable of handling scenic coastal routes.
To avoid delays, particularly during peak season, it’s advisable to book your car rental in advance.
