Alicante is located on the Mediterranean coast of Costa Blanca. The city's highlight, Santa Bárbara Castle, stands 166 meters above on Mount Benacantil, offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean and surrounding mountains. As one of Spain’s largest medieval fortresses, it preserves Moorish and medieval remnants within its ancient walls. The Barrio de Santa Cruz captivates with its whitewashed houses, flower-adorned balconies, and narrow, winding streets. Steep stairways lead to spectacular city views, especially at sunset. The area comes alive at night with cosy tapas bars and lively music.
Alicante is perfectly located for short getaways. 65 kilometres away, the mountain village of Guadalest offers stunning views of a turquoise reservoir next to a medieval castle. Surrounded by rugged peaks, it is perfect for those drawn to history, nature, and dramatic landscapes. Elche, only 23 kilometres from Alicante, is home to Palmeral de Elche, Europe’s largest palm grove and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city blends history and nature, with highlights such as the lush Huerto del Cura gardens, the Misteri d’Elx Basilica, and tranquil walks through palm forests. Just 25 kilometres away, the Canelobre Caves feature one of Spain’s most impressive underground landscapes. Their vast cathedral-like vault, adorned with stalactites and stalagmites, offers a unique subterranean adventure.
Alicante Airport
Alicante–Elche Miguel Hernández Airport (ALC) is approximately 9 kilometres southwest of the city centre of Alicante.
The airport offers a straightforward car rental experience with a car rental centre located just outside Terminal 1. Major car rental companies such as Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Enterprise, and Sixt are located there. If you need to complete the check-in process, you can do so at the desk or self-service kiosk, then simply head to the nearby parking area to pick up your vehicle.
Drop-offs: Cars are returned to the same car rental centre, conveniently located near the terminal.
Payment: A credit card is typically required for both payment and the security deposit. Some companies may also accept debit cards under certain conditions.
Vehicle recommendation: The Toyota Yaris or Mazda3 is ideal for city driving, offering a compact size and efficiency that make parking and navigating narrow streets effortless. For those needing more space, the Renault Megane Sport Tourer or Škoda Octavia Estate provide a practical and comfortable ride for longer journeys while remaining manageable in urban areas. Among compact SUVs, the Peugeot 2008 is an excellent choice, offering a higher driving position while staying compact enough for city streets. The Toyota RAV4, known for its reliability and fuel efficiency, is perfect for those exploring beyond Alicante, including mountain roads and countryside routes.
To avoid delays, particularly during peak season, it’s advisable to book your car rental in advance.
